Official LZF distributor for British Columbia, Symmetry Lighting, staged a brilliant event in their showroom in Vancouver on the 13th of October called “Evoke the Senses”.

Symmetry had come up with a great event concept which involved all their clients into this special evening. Their idea was to invite 40 architecture and interior design firms to design a vignette corner using one of our wood veneer lamps as a muse. Of the forty entrants, four would then be selected and in collaboration with a local builder, Davidson Walker Construction, these vignettes would be built and installed in the Symmetry showroom.

On the night of the event CEO’s Marivi Calvo and Sandro Tothill would have to choose the one they liked the best and the lucky winner would be flown to Spain in February 2017 to attend the anual LZF Symposium.

When the time came for Marivi & Sandro to select the winner they had a tough time of it. Normally Marivi knows exactly what she wants at an instant, but in this case it was different, each vignette had warmed their hearts in a way they found hard to explain. Lzf requested a private meeting with Symmetry owners Carlos, Parm & Tony asking if Symmetry would back their initiative of bringing all architects to the symposium. And so it was agreed, and all four were drawn for the top prize and that each of them would be flown to Spain in February.

Part of the concept of “Evoke the Senses” was that Rithma DJ, collaborator in LZF’s 2013 High Fidelity Campaign would attend making the music for the evening. This reunion with Rithma and the news of the 4 winners upped the energy of the event and we all partied into what was left of the night.

Cervantes pendant by Burkhard Dämmer:
VIGNETTE DESIGNER: Dwayne Smyth [ Shape Architecture ]
CONCEPT
Light brings objects and spaces to life. It defines form and is the fundamental building block of architecture and interior spaces. The proposed vessel to contain the LZF CERVANTES is seen as a backdrop to accentuate the senses and highlight the specific characteristics of the fixture. The vessel is intentionally minimal in order to place importance of the luminaire and the translucent nature of the shade and the soft glow of light it produces.

Domo by Rqr Studio:
VIGNETTE DESIGNER: Imu Chan [ F S O A R K ]
CONCEPT
Code Name “T.T.O.S.”, The Tube Of Something is an ensemble of intersecting cylindrical shapes that as a whole create an occupiable passage offering rich and complex spatial experiences. Like the domo pendant, its simplicity of construction belies its multiple personalities, whose “something-ness” is both strange yet familiar. At times whimsical, at times contemplative, T.T.O.S. is entirely self-supporting and stabilizing, and can be positioned in different orientations. Tentacular openings allow the insertion of the light fixture at various locations. Here we have showcased our design in hot magenta to amplify the mesmerizing glow of the red domo.

Spiro by Remedios Simon:
VIGNETTE DESIGNER: Yvonne Littlewood [ Kasian Architecture ]
CONCEPT
Inspired by Spiro’s features play on sight and organic patterns; I explored the simplicity of nature’s whimsical textures while focusing the experience to looking up, much like the fixture itself.
The Spiro vignette creates a playful story of adventure through discovery of the senses. Imagine walking through a forest and looking up through the trees to see the details and patterns high above in the canopy.
