However you choose to label Christmas—Xmas, Noel, Yuletide, Chrimbo, Chrissie—and wherever in the world you celebrate the festive season, the things that unite all gaiety and cheer include food, a Christmas table, gathering together and a good party. From the icy cold Arctic nations to hot and humid Australasia, Christmas, food and parties go hand in hand. While we don oh-so crazy Christmas sweaters in the northern hemisphere and sing carols by the fireside, south of the equator they’re wearing t-shirts and budgie smugglers, enjoying a barbie and riding a wave. But it’s food and celebration that connects us all.
For many people, one of the great joys of the festive season is throwing a party or hosting a dinner.
A celebratory occasion, much time and effort is often put into dressing and decorating the table. And with many elements to consider, it can be an overwhelming endeavour: tableware, linens, Christmas table centrepieces, Christmas decorations, candles, party favours, novelties, name tags, lighting and sparkle—each and every element has its place.

How to decorate the Christmas table

When decorating a table, it is often helpful to think about a theme, colours, the table decorations, the setting and ambience. Depending on your guests, give some thought to the impression you wish to make—is it a low-key soirée, a casual get-together or a big, pull out all the stops, splash. Perhaps you envisage a rustic countryside scene, a clean Danish arrangement or a tropical paradise.
Maybe you’re enjoying Christmas in a snowbound mountain cabin or on a warm sandy beach. Whatever and wherever the occasion, strive for harmony, aesthetic appeal and a smart appearance. It can be useful to make a list of actions or map out a plan. And remember, rather than a gaudy affair, the Christmas table can, and should, strike an air of elegance and poise.
Whether indoors or outdoors, a magical Christmas table is the anchor of your party. Decorated with seasonal flowers, adorned with fine tableware and trimmed with individual novelties, it is presented in an Instagram-friendly state. Providing ambience, the candlelight is pleasing and intimate, creating a warm, cosy mood. What’s more, the lighting is perfect, with suspension lamps and table lamps illuminating the scene with aplomb. And in the background, Judy’s voice quavers as she croons Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’.
