Hotel Sheraton, another world here on earth
Wind back the clock 2000 years and only the brave would think of setting foot on Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. Far from being the relaxing tourist destination we know it today, Gran Canaria was once a place of vast multitudes of dogs of a very large size.
And if the wild dogs didn’t get you, the vicious monk seals might crawl up the beach and give you a nasty nip. Not exactly what you’d be hoping for while chilling with a margarita and trying to impress someone on the other side of the pool.
Thankfully all of the wild dogs are gone (well, most of them anyway) and the seals are now critically endangered.
Anyway the Hotel Sheraton Gran Canaria Golf Resort asked us not for dogs or seals, but for beautiful handmade wood veneer lamps. To be exact they wanted a Sioux suspension lamp designed by Miguel Herranz, which happens to be no longer in our catalogue, but after looking at these photographs, we think maybe it should be. The fixture graces the length of the hotel’s bar area, illuminating it to great effect in the evenings with an easygoing glow.
The hotel also features a large lighting display of suspended Carambolas by Oskar Cerezo, which hang throughout the hotel’s public spaces and lobby area. The fixtures have been mounted at different heights, giving the room a weightlessness as though defying gravity and putting the viewer off world, which isn’t entirely untrue.
From the beautifully designed swimming lagoon to the exceptional landscaping and remote geographic location, everything about this place is magic and other worldly. You cant help but feel that you have escaped all the hassles of your day to day life and found sanctuary in a safe far off exotic paradise. Which is exactly what is required when on holiday.
