The third volume to LZF´s Telling Tales campaign for  2016 is here. It forms part of a collection of illuminated stories that talk of love solitude and passion. Created by Mariví Calvo and based on three ideas that would make this catalogue different from previous ones the campaign is set at night, providing the perfect opportunity to showcase our lamps when lit. The focus was to also shift away from spaces the housed the lamps to the human beings that inhabit them, and to move the catalogue away from traditional formats and be more a work of artistic creation.

The initial references were to the works of the painter Edward Hopper and the film Rear Window by Hitchcock. Marivi wanted to recreate the colours of film and photography from that period, and the idea that each photograph would evoke a story line coming from the past and moving forward into the future.

Mariví Calvo inició el diseño de campaña a partir de tres ideas que diferenciaran este catálogo de novedades de los anteriores: que las imágenes fueran nocturnas, lo que permitiría presentar las lámparas encendidas; que el protagonismo pasara de los espacios a los seres humanos que los habitan; y que el catálogo se alejara de formatos tradicionales y fuera una obra de creación artística.

Las primeras referencias eran la pintura de Hopper, el color del cine de la época, una cierta forma de vida dentro de interiores evocadores. Buscaban recrear fotográficamente historias ambientadas en los años 50 del siglo XX.

 

Silver always arrives at Dr. Stanford’s clinic in the late afternoon. He goes once a month. He is always very elegant. Today he has to wait as the doctor is still with a patient; the winter has colds running rife among the school children. Her clinic is a paediatric one. I’m positive he’s run into Mrs. Andersen and her children in the waiting room. 

Siempre llega a la clínica de la doctora Stanford a última hora de la tarde. Acude una vez al mes. Es muy elegante. Hoy tiene que esperar, la doctora todavía no ha terminado de pasar consulta, el frío está haciendo estragos entre los niños. La clínica de la doctora Stanford es infantil. Seguro que en la sala de espera se ha encontrado con la señora Anderson y sus hijos. 

The Anderson children are always ill and are at the clinic every month, I think they are pretending, all they really want to do is spend an afternoon in Dr Stanford’s play room. Children these days are very smart, they even know how to lie. I never learnt how to, I only know how to imagine, which is different. 

Esos niños siempre están enfermos, acuden a la consulta todos los meses. Creo que fingen, que, en realidad, lo que desean es pasar la tarde en la sala de juegos que tiene preparada la doctora para ellos. Los niños de ahora son muy inteligentes, incluso saben mentir. Yo nunca aprendí, solo sé imaginar, es distinto.

Mrs Anderson leaves the building holding her daughter by the hand, which means he is already entering into Dr Stanford’s office. I think he’s French, all men that carry a suitcase and wear a hat are french, or bachelors, or maybe even both. He greets her by her name, Ava, and she tells him how much she’s missed him.

La señora Anderson abandona el edificio con su hija de la mano, eso quiere decir que él ya está entrando en el despacho de la doctora. Yo creo que es francés, todos los hombres que llevan maleta y sombrero son franceses o solteros, o las dos cosas. El la saluda por su nombre, Ava, y ella le dice que le estaba echando de menos.

Silver is a couturier. Dr Stanford doesn’t have time to go shopping, I hardly ever see her go out; she’s too busy looking after our children, well I mean, other people’s children, I still don’t have any. Silver will unpack some of his new creations that he’s brought for Ava to try, they are stunning. I wonder when Dr Stanford actually has the time to wear all these dresses ?

Silver es modisto. La doctora Stanford no tiene tiempo para ir de compras, casi nunca la veo salir a la calle; está demasiado ocupada cuidando a nuestros hijos, bueno, a los hijos de los demás, yo todavía no he tenido. Silver sacará uno a uno los nuevos modelos que ha traído para Ava, son bellísimos. ¿Cuándo se pondrá todos esos vestidos la doctora Stanford?

It has started to snow. Ava will tell Silver that he can’t possibly leave now, not in this cold. They’ll spend the night together. He will tell her about all the cities he’s been to and she’ll ask him lots of questions, like, if he likes to dance, or if he also makes clothes for men, or why he never gets sick? The reason Ava asks him so many questions, is because she doesn’t dare ask him the one question she has been wanting to ask him for a very long time.

Ha empezado a nevar. Ava le dirá a Silver que no puede irse ahora, con tanto frío. Pasarán la noche juntos. El le hablará de todas las ciudades que conoce y ella le preguntará muchas cosas; por ejemplo, le preguntará si le gusta bailar, o si también cose para hombres, o por qué nunca se pone enfermo; Ava le hace tantas preguntas porque nunca se atreve a hacerle la pregunta que quiere hacerle desde hace mucho tiempo.
